Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Maple Glaze
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and ground nutmeg.
- Add melted butter and beaten eggs to the yeast mixture, stirring until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Roll out the risen dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Using a donut cutter or two differently sized biscuit cutters, cut out donuts and donut holes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts in batches until they turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Remove the donuts from the oil and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together pure maple syrup and powdered sugar to make the glaze.
- Dip each donut into the glaze, ensuring they are fully coated. Place them on a wire rack to let the excess glaze drip off.
