Apple & Chocolate Chip Squares

(Makes 9–12 squares)

Ingredients:

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100g) brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix-ins:

  • 1 cup (120g) diced apples (peeled & finely chopped)
  • ½ cup (90g) chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk)
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions:

1. Preheat & Prep:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) baking pan with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

3. Combine Wet Ingredients:

  • In another bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
  • Add egg and vanilla, stirring until smooth.

4. Combine & Fold:

  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet, mixing just until combined.
  • Gently fold in diced apples, chocolate chips, and nuts (if using).

5. Bake:

  • Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then lift out and slice into squares.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days (or freeze for longer).
