Sweet Bread Rolls Recipe

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups (440g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Glaze (Optional):

  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk or cream
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast:

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, warm water, and 1 tsp of the sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface (or with a dough hook in a stand mixer) for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3. Let the Dough Rise:

  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the Rolls:

  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  • Place the rolls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Cover and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.

5. Bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

6. Glaze (Optional):

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.

Tips:

  • For extra richness, brush the rolls with melted butter right after baking.
  • Add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar or chopped nuts before baking for added flavor.
  • These rolls are best served warm but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
